Many writers started their professional lives in very diverse fields before embracing writing, or on the contrary have turned away from writing. The present volume seeks to explore the complex relationship between that ‘other life’ and writing. The aim is to determine whether a writer’s ‘other life’ appears in, influences or even shapes his/her work, and to what extent. What is the part of gestation and that of rupture? The tragedy of Mieczysław Romanowski Popiel i Piast, published in 1862, was enthusiastically received by critics in the second half of the 19th century as a testimony to a realistic overthrow of the primacy of Romantic aesthetics in depicting the legendary prehistory of the Polish nation. The preserved handwritten documentation of the genesis of the work, previously viewed randomly and through the prism of its printed version, analyzed using genetic critique methods, reveals the author’s original ideas – closer to the “used” forms of romanticism – and breakthrough moments in shaping the presented world, characters and conflicts of the drama.

The tools offered by genetic criticism, which retracing the dynamic process in order to characterize the genesis of texts, are useful tools in the translation process and, particularly, in the stage of understanding the original text. The preliminary documents and manuscripts may offer some alternatives in the investigation of what Nida called "The closest possible equivalent" as shown in the comparison of Raymond Queneau’s manuscripts of Blue Flowers and Italo Calvino’s translation. The abandoned work is a form of voluntary incompletion because the interruption of the writing process is decided by the author himself. Abandonment is preceded by considerations and traces that make the process intelligible, especially when identified in avant-textual documents in which the author often not only plans the construction of the text but also reasons about it by tracing the criticalities that condition its progress. The article aims to reflect on some aspects of Georges Perec's abandoned works, showing how these are integrated within the completed works through the processes of dissemination and proliferation.
